Choosing the right fabric for your suit

Men’s suit fabrics are constructed in various weights and weaves. The suit – whether a two-piece or a waistcoat thing – is a gentleman’s pride; it’s a piece of clothing that speaks volumes about one’s style and taste.

Going to a trusted tailor to have your suit custom made is the first step,, knowing what fabric to make your suit in is a whole knowledge altogether. The sheer galore of suiting fabrics on the market today can be very overwhelming.

When it comes to choosing the right suit fabric, it’s like curating a wardrobe for different occasions. Choosing the right fabric for your garment involves a thoughtful exploration of various factors – the occasion of wear, comfort, durability and budget are consideration factors. Keep in mind the climate and seasons.  Whatever fabric you choose, it’s crucial to find a good tailor who will advise if the chosen fabric flatters your body silhouette.

For those fancy shindigs, go for the luxurious feel of wool or top-notch blends in navy, charcoal, or black, maybe with some subtle pinstripes to up the sophistication. For weddings, lighter wool or linen for sunny days, and heavier wool or tweed for the chilly ones, and all in neutral shades for that perfect wedding guest vibe. When it’s business time, stick with classic worsted wool or blends, a solid color, or maybe a classy herringbone pattern to project that competent and stylish image. Casual hangouts call for the easygoing charm of cotton, linen, or blends in cool earthy tones. And for those black-tie affairs, bring out the big guns and think of fine wool or velvet in classic black or midnight blue for that timeless, formal flair. Lastly, outdoor events are all about comfort, so cotton or linen blends in laid-back shades are your go-to for a relaxed yet stylish look.

Suiting Fabrics for All Occasions

Wool is the king of fabric for men’s suits. Most of our custom-made suits are made in premium wool wool from leading European mills like Loro Piana, Ermengildo Zegna and Holland & Sherry. Wool is natural fiber (spun from the wool of sheep), it breathes well, luxuriously drapes well and is wearable across seasons, except harsh winter. There are many types of wool  – worsted wool, virgin wool, merino wool, tweed, flannel are all wool.

Mohair is also wool, sheared wool from Angora goats. It is tougher than sheep wool and has a notable strength. Today, wool and mohair blend suits are a popular choice as Travel Suit as it is highly wrinkle resistant with a good luster, breathable and easy to maintain.

Cashmere wool (cashmere goat) and Vicuna (world’s most expensive commercially available fiber) are the highest grades of natural wool, one of the softest and most luxurious types of wool in existence. In men’s fabrics for suits, it has a subtle luxurious shine and makes a statement of power and beauty for leisurely suits

Wool and wool blends have been the go-to in men’s suiting for centuries. However, there are also beautiful fabrics and textures that are suitable for suits too. Natural fibers like linen, hopsack (blend of wool and cotton), seersucker can be suitable for suits too, especially for tropical weather like Singapore.

If casual dapper is your vibes, linen suits would be your ultimate choice. Linen is ultra-light and super cool. However, it creases easily and stains more easily than other wool, so immaculate care and maintenance is needed to stay crisp and fresh. Having said that, wrinkling is often considered part of the charm with linen – beautiful when worn well. So have a linen suit ready in your wardrobe for summer date or garden wedding functions

Synthetics fabrics like 100% polyester, rayon, and acetate don’t breathe well and are not ideal for sensitive skin as it itches.  Unless you are on a budget, opt for fabric polyester that is  blended with a higher percentage of wool (80%)  but be prepared that a polyester-based suit  trap heat and Sweating can also discolor the fabric. Polyester suits also fail to drape well, so you won’t look your best. It may be helpful to know that polyester is one of the most polluting fabrics out there –  a “plastic like material. This is why we always advocate 100% natural fabrics as it is environmentally sustainable, and kinder to our skin.

Characteristics of
Premium Fabric for Suits

Investing in a premium or quality fabric suit not only ensures a polished appearance but also guarantees long-term wear. For long term investment, go for 100% natural fiber. If budget allows, a 100% wool suit is always the best option, where you can opt for tropical wool or lightweight wool for its high breathability, soft drape and versatility wear for  most occasions.

Always opt for a premium suiting fabric that boasts strength, breathability, feel gentle on the skin, and has an optimal balance of structure and drape. Avoid loosely woven, inferior materials that lack the durability needed for long-term wear.  Prioritize breathability. Most natural fabrics let you naturally regulate your temperature. whereas plastic-based synthetics just trap sweat (and thus, body odor) inside them. Opting for breathable fabrics lets you look (and smell) better, and will cut down on laundering, too. That makes all the difference in the real world, when running for the train or out in the sun all day. Opting for fabrics without itchiness is crucial, as the allure of a beautiful suit diminishes if it proves uncomfortable to wear.

Lastly, select a fabric with yarn strength for well-tailored, structured crisp lines, but be cautious not to veer towards ultra-stiff materials with minimal drapes. Consider the weave of the fabric too, as a tight weave contributes to durability. The elegance and fluidity introduced by a fabric with a graceful drape can transform your suit from rigid to sophisticated. Ultimately, the right fabric ensures your suit looks sharp

I’ve used many tailors in Singapore and a couple in London. In Singapore my go to tailor was an old chap working for Justmens in Tanglin. He’s retired and they’ve closed the shop. That particular gent used to make ceremonial military uniforms for the airmen at Seletar airbase. Since then I’d not found an equal in Singapore. Until now.Mr Chung is an excellent tailor. I’ve had 3 shirts, a sports jacket and a 2 piece suit made up and they are well made, perfectly cut and fit me well. As with all highly personalised services communication is very important and if you take the time to engage with Mr Chung, the result is a suit which fits perfectly and is sturdily constructed to last for years. Don’t expect to see Teba jackets or shackets. Chung does the Savile Row style impeccably. I’ve not asked him to do the lighter Neapolitan style. That will be my next project. If you’re looking for a well fitting high quality suit, Chung is the man for you.

I had 3 pairs of trousers tailored, Mr. Chung and Adele provided excellent service. In 4 days, they helped me select material and provided 2 fittings. After the work was completed, they shipped my nicely packaged trousers internationally as promised. The quality of the fabric, workmanship and the fit were excellent. Adel helped me select an Italian fabric as I requested, and the quality of the final product exceeded my expectation. I have been a customer for 25 years and Meiko Tailor is on my shopping list when I am in Singapore.

Had several shirts and trousers tailored for myself here. Before deciding to commission them, I had a session with Adele to consult on what she thinks would suit my skin tone, build and lifestyle, which was very pleasant and insightful. The range of quality fabrics is both amazing and overwhelming, but Adele’s recommendation really helped me to nail down my choices. Really love how my commissions turned out, the fit and quality of the tailoring are impeccable. Especially love the collars of the shirts; they give the shirts a distinctive look and presence when worn. I could not recommend Meiko tailor enough if you’re looking for a wardrobe overhaul or just new pieces of clothing for more formal occasions.

Meiko tailor is one of the finest tailor in town. I wanted to commission a new suit for a special event and was worried that I may not have enough time. I spoke with Uncle Chung and Adele to let them know what I wanted and they immediately began work on measuring me during the first meeting. Within a week, my first fitting was scheduled and the whole suit was done within 3 weeks. Uncle Chung knew exactly what I wanted for the suit, made all the finishing which I desired and made a suit which I am very excited to wear. They were really nice and discussed with me about every aspect from the peaked lapels of my suit to the side adjustors on my pants. It was a pleasurable and memorable experience and I'm very glad to have commissioned a suit with them!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Fabric for Suits in Singapore

Wool is the most suitable fabric and one of the most versatile and durable material for men’s suit. It can be worn both in colder and warmer climates. It can be silky smooth, soft or wiry. It can be plain or patterned. In general, wool is ideal for business jackets and trousers because it feels nice to the skin and wears well. High quality wool fabrics are known for:

  1. Warmth — air pockets in wool threads trap heat and make you feel warm and cozy.
  2. Durability — wool fibers are strong and resilient, so wool fabrics wear out slowly.
  3. Lustre — wool fabrics have a natural lustre, especially worsted wool cloths.
  4. Drape — wool cloth drapes well and tends to remember the shape of the body it is worn on.

Linen suits from Solbiati are great for Singapore’s weather because they allow your skin to breathe. They’re perfect for business casual or social settings, depending on how one spruces up the look. For a more refined structure, opt for linen wool silk from Loro Piana or blend, where there’s better drape and structure.  Hopsacks or Fresco wool are also popular choices ase well.

Made using the fleece of the merino sheep which lives mainly in Australia and New Zealand where reputable fabric mills manufacture the raw materials into high yarn count of  Super 250’s wool. It’s the finest and silkiest type of worsted wool fabric, which is as delicate as you can imagine.

For the fashion connoisseurs, the vicuña, the finest animal fiber in the world, is a real treat. The 100% vicuna fabrics are rare and uber expensive and only suitable for special occasion jackets.

Deciding between a linen and wool suit depends on your preference. For warmer, more humid weather, hopsack wool or linen are both ideal, as they offer breathability and comfort all day long. If it’s meant for cooler weather, a ball of twill-weave wool is an excellent option for your suit. Linen suits are good for hot weather because they’re light and let air through, but they can wrinkle easily. Wool suits work for different occasions and weather, keeping you warm and looking neat.

Fabric quality is one of the first things you should get acquainted with when buying a quality suit. Apart from giving off an aura of refinement, fine materials also feel better, keep their shape and look good throughout the life of the suit. One of the major determinants of fabric quality is thread count. The higher the S-Count number  the finer the yarn. This will make it softer and smoother. However, the optimum thread count for everyday wear is probably around Super 110 to Super 130. The higher you go from Super 150s to Super 200s,  the more fragile the suit. While judging fabric quality requires experience, one of the fundamental ways to test is by scrunching the fabric swatch in your fist. If it bounces back into shape easily, the fabric is of decent quality.

The price for suiting fabric depends on the harvest grade of natural fiber like linen or animal wool like merino wool as well as the sophisticated technology in yarning, spinning and weaving the raw material from yarn to cloth.  Long, strong, natural fibers are most desirable for quality garments, but take the most effort, skill, and cost to produce. A suit needs over 3.5 yards of fabric to make, so it’s certainly a decent chunk of the overall cost. Not all wools are created equally. There’s a reason that we choose fabrics from the best quality mills of Italy, Europe and England, and the best wools come from reputable, established mills, who’ve often been around for a very long time, and of course, they’ve earned the right to charge appropriately for their superior products.

Polyester suits are very flexible and can be worn in different places, like at work or fancy parties. Even though polyester and polyester blends don’t let as much air in as some other fabrics, they are a good choice for people on a budget because they are affordable and last a long time.

Polyester or wool/poly blend suits are shiny and look cheap because the material is cheap. Usually the suit itself isn’t very well constructed. There will be less thread and possibly more fraying at the seams, the lining will usually also be shiny, slippery polyester and the buttons will usually be plastic.

Wool silk blend or cashmere silk blend on the other hand has the natural sheen from the yarn.
